Weight, fencing, and warmth

I know now how much a backpack sprayer full of herbicide weighs. 42 lbs. That is about the recommended weight when one goes hiking and backpacking. The difference being a backpack has a waist belt and much of the weight rests on one's hips. The backpack sprayer does not have a waist belt so all the weight rests on one's shoulders. It takes an hour, to an hour and a half, to go through a container of herbicide. Thursday I sprayed two containers of herbicide in a row. By the time I finished my shoulders were tired.

I am still playing cat-and-mouse with the gopher in the hayfield. He is still plugging the holes with a trap with dirt. Tonight I found that a hole he plugged yesterday with dirt was reopened after I moved the trap. One smart gopher.

I am up to 70 gophers trapped this year. I will easily exceed last year's total of 82 as the gophers don't go into hibernation until the end of July. I have a month to eliminate more. I hope to get rid of them all before next year's breeding season but that is a tall order, especially I will have to rotate the cattle back into the pasture where the gophers are mainly located and will lose days of trapping because of that.

I finished putting the last three steel fence posts in the south pasture's fences. Of course after I am out there I found another fence post that is a candidate for extra support. The cattle came over to "help" me for each of the fence posts. I was able to do a headcount and all 30 are there. So the one that slipped into the river the previous day got back out.

Since I was in the "fencing" frame of mind I added five steel fence posts to the north/middle pasture fence where the cattle had broken old fence posts this year. Fencing, like most things on the ranch, never ends.

Tonight a front came through with thunderstorms. The storms were mainly elsewhere in the Valley but the entire Valley got wind. Sustained winds of 25 mph. The strong winds were kind of eerie. I know, having lived in North Dakota and Minnesota 25 mph winds should be matter-of-fact. But not being exposed to them for 6 years, these winds seem eerie. The wind was blowing dirt from fields around me adding to the strange feeling.

It sprinkled rain for a little bit. Not enough to have an effect. This is unfortunate as it is drying up and we really need rain. Thursday high was a record high of 92 degrees. Now didn't we have a record low of 31 degrees a few days earlier? That's Montana.

Yesterday afternoon and last night was miserable. I felt like I was back in Minnesota. Clouds and a minor front came through and raised the humidity. In the afternoon with the 91 degrees our humidity rose to 32%. It was miserable. I wasn't the only person to feel this way as my hiking group all agreed that Thursday was too hot and humid.

Then at night, with the cloud cover, our low temperature stayed warmed at 55 degrees and the humidity rose as the temperature fell so the humidity rose to 80%. I woke up several times during the night to get water to drink as I was hot and thirsty. I tossed covers off my bed until I only had sheet to cover me. Being so warm and humid it was hard to get to a deep sleep. I had to get up early for Friday's hike and I only got 5 and 1/2 hours sleep before waking at 6 am sharp, well before the time I set the alarm to wake me.

Way past my bedtime. I felt asleep while proof reading what I wrote. At least the temperature is not as not and humid as last night.

June sunset

Tonight's sunset. I almost missed it as I was looking down at pocket gopher traps.

The cheap little digital camera I have does ok, but it didn't quite catch the colors.

Time for bed as I need to get up at an insanely early hour to meet the group by 8 am for Friday's hike on the east side of the mountains. And here I haven't finished writing about last Friday's hike to Elk Mountain.

Cattle island

Today the cattle crossed the east river channel to the island. I can't say it is earlier than when the cattle crossed to the island last year as I never put the cattle into the south pasture until later last year.

I have had the cattle in the south pasture, what, three days, and they already crossed to the island. And if you remember back to the photos of when they first entered the south pasture, the grass was fairly tall. Still is. But you know cattle, "The grass is greener over there."

They spent the afternoon going round and round the island excited to discover a new place. At one point I heard one of the cattle slip off the bank and splash into the middle river channel. By the time I could move to where I could see where I had heard the splash, it apparently already climbed back onto the island. I could see where the grass was matted down on the river bank and I didn't see any cattle in the river. Seeing as how they were on the island I couldn't do a headcount as they were spread out in the trees, and I would have had to cross the river myself to get to the island.

Kids!!!

The river level is dropping steadily, but at 333 CFS I didn't expect the cattle to cross so soon. This is a confident and curious herd of cattle. It may be a long summer.

Oh yeah, while not checking on the cattle I finished spraying the weeds in the NE pasture. I also caught 3 gophers. I had trapped a gopher out of the NW part of the hayfield but there is another one. The holes were reopened. I set two traps. While setting the second trap the gopher came bounding through the grass and down a hole near where I was setting the trap. Augh! I didn't have my shovel handy and couldn't stop him.

Today I found he is ignoring one hole with a trap and plugged the other hole with dirt. *sigh* Why does the smart gopher have to be in the hayfield?!

Picnic in the park concert

Tuesday night I attended another Picnic in the Park concert. This concert was by Cocinando. They are a local group that plays Afro-Cuban jazz and tropical Latin dance music. I heard them before and they are pretty good.

The concert was from 7 to 9 pm. I had hoped to arrive before the concert started in order to get a good spot. When I arrive after the concert starts, because of my bicycle I end up in the back as I don't want to thread through the crowd to find a spot for me and my bicycle. It took longer than planned to check my pocket gopher traps so I didn't arrive until after the concert started. ...naturally.

When I got home I found out how much of a rush I had been to leave for the concert. I left my house door open. Not just unlocked, but open. Okay, the screen door was closed, but big deal, one could easily see the house door was open. I was gone over 3 hours but no one must have been here as nothing is missing.

At the concert I ended up standing at the back of the crowd against a building. It was not all bad as I could stand, sit, and lean against my bicycle and the building during the concert. Being in the back I was able to people watch during the concert. The music was not too loud. The downside was that people there to socialize and not just listen to the music were able to socialize and be distracting.

The band was good. Other than Santana's song of "Oye Como Va" as their closing song, the band played - unknown to me - traditional Afro-Cuban jazz and tropical Latin dance music. The music was good, but being on the jazzy and salsa side, somewhat mellow. The music may have been better suited for a nightclub than an outdoor venue like the park.

At the intermission they raffled off some prizes. One prize was 6 lbs of dog food.

There were lots of people at the concert. As it got later, the sun lower in the sky, and a little cooler, some people put on extra shirts or sweatshirts. And as usual, as time went on people started to drift away. Some people I can understand such as the ladies from an assisted living home out in their wheelchairs with attendant. One old lady as she passed by in her wheelchair commented I needed long legs to ride my bicycle.

A teenage boy walked by with his bicycle looking for a place for him and his girlfriend to sit with their bicycles. He had a very nice Cannondale racing bicycle. She was riding a green cruiser bicycle.

Here is a photo of the couple. I didn't think to take the photo until after they sat down. They left when I wasn't looking their way so I never got a photo of their bicycles when the bicycles were upright.

Early on a guy joined a couple sitting on lawn chairs next to me. This guy (in the white shirt and sunglasses) was a talker. Almost non-stop. The stereotype is women talk alot. Not compared to this guy. If he had a wife I am sure he would drive her crazy with all his talking. Talk, and talk, and talk. I wanted to just hear the music without a distraction of someone always talking.

At intermission they told the younger guy's wife they were going to walk down to Moose's to have a pitcher of beer. They may have had more than one pitcher as they didn't return until much later, well after the band started to play again. Thank heavens for small miracles.

Later four young kids sat down in the grass in front of me. One was a young couple and the other two didn't act like a couple and sat apart. Later they were joined by a third guy. The guys all talked animatedly while the girlfriend just wanted to sit against her boyfriend. The way he acted as she sat against him was somewhat of indifference. He was more into the conversation with the other two guys. She didn't seem to talk much.

The other girl, a brunette, occasionally would join in the conversation when she could. The guys seemed to be looking and talking with one another. This other girl isn't chopped liver. She had an extremely beautiful face. Hair, eyes, smile, skin complexion - she had it all. Why no boyfriend? And she had common sense as when it got cooler she got a light sweater out of her bag and put it on.

The guys had a certain attitude. By attitude I don't mean it in a bad way. I mean they seemed to be calm, confident, relaxed, and engaged. They actually seemed to be discussing things instead of just joking around. And there was no showing off for the girls. These guys seemed to be good friends and the world and the future was endless for them.

The girls seemed to be just content being around the guys even though the guys weren't showing them any special attention.

Ah, to be young again.

Before the kids arrived I had noticed a woman with two girls. No ring on her left hand - a single woman. Well! My Uncle Larry had emailed me after I missed the previous week's concert telling me I should have gone to the concert so I could have met women. And here was one.

For much of the concert this woman faced the band (naturally) so I couldn't get a look at her face. What I could see looked good as she had a nice figure and dressed nice. She was trim but from the look of her calves, I wondered how much physical activity she did. Probably not a whole lot of hiking if she was a single mom with responsibilities. Her kids seemed to be well behaved.

Now did I go talk to her, especially considering her kids left her alone for a while until they returned with something to drink? No. And yes, there was room for both me and my bicycle.

I did get a look at her face, and while she looked nice, and somewhat age appropriate for me, I don't know, something about her demeanor didn't seem inviting. She had a stern look to her. (Maybe that's why her kids were so well behaved?)

And you know, I am pretty happy right now as my life is pretty good. While all my prior girlfriends made my prior good life that much better, I am worried my luck will change with the next girlfriend. No one can bat a thousand, can they? I am really hesitant about getting a girlfriend. It's gonna take more than seeing an attractive single woman right now to get me to initiate contact.

The band ended right at 9 pm. The sun was still up. It was a nice evening so I rode a longer way home.

Below freezing

The predicted low temperature Monday night was 34 F. The actual overnight low temperature was 31 F. Below freezing! And the date is... June 26!

I didn't get up early enough to see if there was frost around my place. By the time I got up the temperature was in the 50s F. I didn't find out about the low temperature until the 10 pm weather report so I hadn't a chance to look my garden over for frost damage. I hadn't noticed anything wrong with the plants earlier. Hopefully, unlike Fall, the Spring warming of the ground radiated enough heat overnight to prevent frost from forming on the garden plants. It would be ironic to have my garden damaged by frost after I planted it so late this year.

Tonight's low temperature is not suppose to be cold as it is predicted to be 40 F. It currently is 50 F now. Tomorrow's high temperature is predicted to be 90 F. A 50 degree change during the day.

Montana. That is where I live.

Backpack sprayer

I decided to buy a backpack sprayer today. I have a 2 gallon sprayer that I have to carry in my hand, and after several years one arm is longer than the other and I never was able to spray all of my pasture.

Spraying gets rid of the weeds as areas I have sprayed have far, far less weeds than non-sprayed areas. Of course some weeds need to be sprayed multiple years to eliminate them. Weeds such as Canadian Thistle and snowberry bushes. Some non-sprayed areas seemed to have increased in weeds since last year. This has discouraged me the past few days as I walked the pasture to set gopher traps. So I decided to get a backpack sprayer as it holds 4 gallons instead of 2 gallons. As I move further out in the pasture this will mean less trips back to the house to mix another batch of herbicide.

I bought a RL Pro Flo sprayer at Home Depot. I compared a few brands and they were fairly similar, and this was the cheapest of the group at a little under $80.

After assembling the sprayer I filled it up and sprayed in the NE pasture this afternoon. Initially it was nice to not have to carry the tank of herbicide in my hand. As time went on the tank weighed heavier and heavier on my shoulders. Hmmm... maybe I haven't recovered from carrying all those rocks in my backpack during the Elk Mountain hike last Friday. What next? Buy an ATV and tow a small herbicide tank behind it? Buy a tank for the pickup and drive around and spray from it?

Well... these methods may be quicker but the problem is I have trees in the pasture and this spray kills broad leaf weeds and trees. So a hand sprayer is necessary for large parts of the pasture.

My new and old sprayers, Brash herbicide and the sticking agent (to make the herbicide stick to the weed), and the measuring cup and cap.

Broken bowl

Since today was a rainy, cloudy, windy, cold day I mainly stayed indoors much of the day. I decided to make another bowl of Jello.

However just after I poured the hot water onto the Jello mix in the bowl, the bowl shattered into pieces. Partially dissolved Jello water flowed all over my counter. What a mess!

After cleaning up the mess here is what the bowl now looks like. I have used this bowl many times for Jello, most recently the past few days. I guess this was one time too many.

Sunset clouds and moon

Here are photos of tonight's sunset. After a little rain this morning, the clouds are now clearing away. The overnight low temperature is predicted to be close to freezing at 34 degrees. I hope it is not any colder as I didn't cover my garden.

Also, here is a photo of the moon over my hayfield.

Cattle in the south pasture

Sunday I worked on the south pasture's fences. My goal is to rotate cattle more often between pastures and after a week in the middle pasture I decided to move the cattle. Of course, I had to first work on fences, especially as the south fence borders a neighbor and not just another pasture.

These fences were not in as bad condition as the middle pasture fences. And I have no fence along the river as most of the river bank is low to the river in the south pasture. I ended up adding 10 new posts and also added boards to a gate to the hayfield. Tomorrow I will add three more posts to some weak posts.

In a couple of spots barb wire strands were stretched and bent around one another's barbs to make an opening in the south fence. And an unusual number of wire strands were no longer nailed to fence posts. Probably caused by the neighbors who crossed my land without permission to fish in the river until I caught them and put a stop to it.

Some of the western salsify (goat's beard) are opening to seed balls. I ended up spending a fair amount of time in the south pasture gathering these seed balls into a plastic bag. I also plucked the unopened seed heads I found. There were quite a number. I noticed the deer had been eating a number of them. The cattle will eat them also, but with the number of the weeds that opened to seed balls already, I decided to pluck the ones I found instead of counting on the cattle eating them all before they open.

Earlier when I started the fence work the cattle gathered in their favorite siesta spot under a very large pine pine and also near some of the salt blocks. A number of the cattle stood by the gate and looked at me in the south pasture and moo'd at me telling me they wanted to come into the south pasture also.

By the time I had added all the fence posts some of the cattle were again approaching their siesta spot and the gate. I decided to let them into the south pasture and opened the gate. The first few came over, and after a brief hesitation at the gate and tall grass, almost leapt into the south pasture. Usually the cattle slowly mosey through gates when I open them. Most of the following cattle did the same thing when passing through the gate: leapt. Quickly all the cattle were in the south pasture except one of my steers who looked puzzled by what was going on. I moved away from the gate and went to get the salt blocks and wooden holder and this last steer went through the gate to join the others.

The cattle quickly went to business eating the "new" grass. There is still plenty of grass in the middle pasture, but to cattle "new is better".

After moving the salt into the south pasture I removed the three gopher traps I had in that pasture. Two traps were empty but the third trap had a live gopher. This was from a hole I had trapped two other gophers from the past week.

Darn! I didn't have my shovel with me to use for a quick kill. Even with one leg trapped the gopher was very lively. How to kill it? This trap was close to the river so I put the gopher in the river and drowned it. Thankfully it was quick. I do what I have to do, but it doesn't mean I like doing it. No way was I letting the gopher go.

I moved the three traps back to the middle pasture / hayfield fence. The gopher holes I attempted to trap a gopher from were now open again today. The past week the holes with traps were either ignored, else the hole was filled with dirt. Then no activity - so I had moved the traps. Now today a burst of activity with large mounds of new dirt outside of the re-opened holes, and some new holes. *argh!* I guess the nearby pocket gophers didn't chase the gopher away. I hope the newly set traps will catch the gopher. No way do I want gophers in my hayfield!!

Before and after of my gate work. Think it looks more impressive to the cattle now? Ya, I know - a poor man's gate. I should have bought the gates at that auction.

The cattle in the south pasture eating the "new" hay. The grass is a nice length. This should make the cattle happy for a few days.

The salt box before I moved it to the south pasture. This is not the siesta tree, but a smaller tree next to their siesta tree.

Cut photo

For those who wondered about my cut, here is a photo of it. As you can see, no big deal.

In case you forgot, here is a link to the description how I accidently cut myself.

Big 5 Personality Survey

The following is an internet-based study of personality. There are five basic dimensions of personality:
  1. Extraversion,
  2. Emotional Stability,
  3. Agreeableness,
  4. Conscientiousness,
  5. Openness to Experience.
This appears to be a valid personality test from Northwestern University. I took the test and this is how I scored, which is generally how I see myself. Most scores were higher or lower (the 3rd percentile?!) than I expected. However when a person takes the test, it asks questions on behaviors a person sees themselves as having, which can be different as to how others see and interpret those behaviors.

The test is 86 questions, and some of them seem unrelated to personality as they were a "solve the question" type of puzzle. I don't know if I answered them correctly as they don't tell you the answers, but I do know I did unscramble the word correctly.

Here is a link to the test.

My results:

Extraversion Report

Your average score on extraversion was 2.5, which is considered low. It is in approximately the 3rd percentile for males over the age of 21.

Your score on Extraversion is low, indicating you are introverted, reserved, and quiet. You enjoy solitude and solitary activities. Your socializing tends to be restricted to a few close friends.

Extraversion is marked by pronounced engagement with the external world. Extraverts enjoy being with people, are full of energy, and often experience positive emotions. They tend to be enthusiastic, action-oriented, individuals who are likely to say "Yes!" or "Let's go!" to opportunities for excitement. In groups they like to talk, assert themselves, and draw attention to themselves.

Introverts lack the exuberance, energy, and activity levels of extraverts. They tend to be quiet, low-key, deliberate, and disengaged from the social world. Their lack of social involvement should not be interpreted as shyness or depression; the introvert simply needs less stimulation than an extravert and prefers to be alone. The independence and reserve of the introvert is sometimes mistaken as unfriendliness or arrogance. In reality, an introvert who scores high on the agreeableness dimension will not seek others out but will be quite pleasant when approached.

Agreeableness Report

Your average score on agreeableness was 4.3, which is considered high. It is in approximately the 79th percentile for males over the age of 21.

Your high level of Agreeableness indicates a strong interest in others' needs and well-being. You are pleasant, sympathetic, and cooperative.

Agreeableness reflects individual differences in concern with cooperation and social harmony. Agreeable individuals value getting along with others. They are therefore considerate, friendly, generous, helpful, and willing to compromise their interests with others'. Agreeable people also have an optimistic view of human nature. They believe people are basically honest, decent, and trustworthy.

Disagreeable individuals place self-interest above getting along with others. They are generally unconcerned with others' well-being, and therefore are unlikely to extend themselves for other people. Sometimes their skepticism about others' motives causes them to be suspicious, unfriendly, and uncooperative.

Agreeableness is obviously advantageous for attaining and maintaining popularity. Agreeable people are better liked than disagreeable people. On the other hand, agreeableness is not useful in situations that require tough or absolute objective decisions. Disagreeable people can make excellent scientists, critics, or soldiers.

Conscientiousness Report

Your average score on conscientiousness was 4.8, which is considered high. It is in approximately the 90th percentile for males over the age of 21.

Your score on Conscientiousness is high. This means you set clear goals and pursue them with determination. People regard you as reliable and hard-working.

Conscientiousness concerns the way in which we control, regulate, and direct our impulses. Impulses are not inherently bad; occasionally time constraints require a snap decision, and acting on our first impulse can be an effective response. Also, in times of play rather than work, acting spontaneously and impulsively can be fun. Impulsive individuals can be seen by others as colorful, fun-to-be-with, and zany.

Nonetheless, acting on impulse can lead to trouble in a number of ways. Some impulses are antisocial. Uncontrolled antisocial acts not only harm other members of society, but also can result in retribution toward the perpetrator of such impulsive acts. Another problem with impulsive acts is that they often produce immediate rewards but undesirable, long-term consequences. Examples include excessive socializing that leads to being fired from one's job, hurling an insult that causes the breakup of an important relationship, or using pleasure-inducing drugs that eventually destroy one's health.

Impulsive behavior, even when not seriously destructive, diminishes a person's effectiveness in significant ways. Acting impulsively disallows contemplating alternative courses of action, some of which would have been wiser than the impulsive choice. Impulsivity also sidetracks people during projects that require organized sequences of steps or stages. Accomplishments of an impulsive person are therefore small, scattered, and inconsistent.

A hallmark of intelligence, what potentially separates human beings from earlier life forms, is the ability to think about future consequences before acting on an impulse. Intelligent activity involves contemplation of long-range goals, organizing and planning routes to these goals, and persisting toward one's goals in the face of short-lived impulses to the contrary. The idea that intelligence involves impulse control is nicely captured by the term prudence, an alternative label for the Conscientiousness domain. Prudent means both wise and cautious. Persons who score high on the Conscientiousness scale are, in fact, perceived by others as intelligent.

The benefits of high conscientiousness are obvious. Conscientious individuals avoid trouble and achieve high levels of success through purposeful planning and persistence. They are also positively regarded by others as intelligent and reliable. On the negative side, they can be compulsive perfectionists and workaholics. Furthermore, extremely conscientious individuals might be regarded as stuffy and boring. Unconscientious people may be criticized for their unreliability, lack of ambition, and failure to stay within the lines, but they will experience many short-lived pleasures and they will never be called stuffy.

Emotional Stability Report

Your average score on emotional stability was 4.4, which is considered high. It is in approximately the 79th percentile for males over the age of 21.

Your score on Emotional Stability is high indicating that you are exceptionally calm, composed and unflappable. You do not react with intense emotions, even to situations that most people would describe as stressful.

Emotional stability is the opposite of emotional reactivity, which is the tendency to experience negative feelings. Those who score low on emotional stability may experience primarily one specific negative feeling such as anxiety, anger, or depression, but are likely to experience several of these emotions. People low in emotional stability are emotionally reactive. They respond emotionally to events that would not affect most people, and their reactions tend to be more intense than normal. They are more likely to interpret ordinary situations as threatening, and minor frustrations as hopelessly difficult. Their negative emotional reactions tend to persist for unusually long periods of time, which means they are often in a bad mood. These problems in emotional regulation can diminish a ones ability to think clearly, make decisions, and cope effectively with stress.

At the other end of the scale, individuals who score high in emotional stability are less easily upset and are less emotionally reactive. They tend to be calm, emotionally stable, and free from persistent negative feelings. Freedom from negative feelings does not mean that high scorers experience a lot of positive feelings; frequency of positive emotions is a component of the Extraversion domain.

Openness Report

Your average score on openness was 4, which is considered average. It is in approximately the 31st percentile for males over the age of 21.

Your score on Openness to Experience is average, indicating you enjoy tradition but are willing to try new things. Your thinking is neither simple nor complex. To others you appear to be a well-educated person but not an intellectual.

Openness to Experience describes a dimension of cognitive style that distinguishes imaginative, creative people from down-to-earth, conventional people. Open people are intellectually curious, appreciative of art, and sensitive to beauty. They tend to be, compared to closed people, more aware of their feelings. They tend to think and act in individualistic and nonconforming ways. Intellectuals typically score high on Openness to Experience; consequently, this factor has also been called Culture or Intellect. Nonetheless, Intellect is probably best regarded as one aspect of openness to experience. Scores on Openness to Experience are only modestly related to years of education and scores on standard intelligent tests.

Another characteristic of the open cognitive style is a facility for thinking in symbols and abstractions far removed from concrete experience. Depending on the individual's specific intellectual abilities, this symbolic cognition may take the form of mathematical, logical, or geometric thinking, artistic and metaphorical use of language, music composition or performance, or one of the many visual or performing arts. People with low scores on openness to experience tend to have narrow, common interests. They prefer the plain, straightforward, and obvious over the complex, ambiguous, and subtle. They may regard the arts and sciences with suspicion, regarding these endeavors as abstruse or of no practical use. Closed people prefer familiarity over novelty; they are conservative and resistant to change.

Openness is often presented as healthier or more mature by psychologists, who are often themselves open to experience. However, open and closed styles of thinking are useful in different environments. The intellectual style of the open person may serve a professor well, but research has shown that closed thinking is related to superior job performance in police work, sales, and a number of service occupations.
