Today I let the cattle into the north pasture. This is closest they have been to the horses. Both species have been curious about one another for some time now.
The male horse ("Glacier Cat" but we called him "Stud") seems to have been beaten down by "Cowgirl" (aka The Bitch). The horses now tend to keep near each other. However Cowgirl never seems to waste an opportunity to pick on "Stud". Whenever she walks by him she will push him or bite him. He seems resigned to being picked on by Cowgirl.
The other day I cleaned the wooden hay feeder. Underneath the feeder's floor was the hay residue that slipped between the floor's cracks. The horses seem to like this stuff. However when I came back from checking a pocket gopher trap Cowgirl and her buddy, "Firefeather" were eating the hay residue. When "Stud" and "Lily" came over to eat Cowgirl lifted her head and gave "Stud" a look he backed off.
That didn't go over well with me so I chased Cowgirl away and let "Stud" and "Lily" join "Firefeather" eating the residue. Cowgirl tried to slip back in. However she wouldn't share and whenever she pushed or bit "Stud" I chased her away. Cowgirl's attitude filtered down to "Lily" as she started chasing Firefeather away from the residue.
These horses act like they are high school girls.
