Horses, ceiling and fire

The horses left Saturday.  Late Summer and early Fall were dry.  Even though October was wet it was too late to re-green the grass (some weeds on the other hand...!)   Therefore the horses got 'ahead' of the grass in the pasture they were in.   Since I have Momma and Baby the horses are allowed in only one pasture.  So the horses left earlier this year than last year.   The owners weren't sure they could load all four horses in their trailer but we had no problem.  It took longer to position the horse trailer than it did to load the horses.

Saturday I washed the living room ceiling.  I don't know when the ceiling was last washed but there is a noticeable difference pre and post wash.

When visiting in May 2011 my aunts Cathy and Diane washed a large part of my ceiling for me.  It took me until now to finally finish washing the ceiling.  I washed the entire living room ceiling, even the part that had been washed before and looked clean.

While I was washing the ceiling Tammy noticed my neighbor across the road had a fire going near his house.  It appears he was burning a large pile of branches cut from the trees that he hauled off after they blew over during the storm last June.

It was raining and had been raining since late afternoon.  And it had been a wet week.  The owner had burned stuff in the past so I wasn't concerned.  The fire was big but it also smoked a lot as it dried wet material as it burned.

Later I heard sirens.  I looked out the window and saw his fire had spread from the branch pile to his grove of trees.   The underbrush and tree trunks looked to be on fire.  The flames had not reached the branches so the trees had not turned into giant torches.  But it wouldn't be long.  And as the trees are right next to one another, once one turned into a torch, the others would be quick to follow.

A small fire truck had just pulled up.  The larger fire truck was blocked in the driveway.  The driveway was a single lane.  A pickup and a flatbed trailer loaded with large round hay bales was along the driveway.  The larger fire truck couldn't get around the trailer until the trailer was moved.

Once the hay trailer was moved the larger fire truck drove in, turned around the end of the driveway and left.  Apparently the smaller truck could handle the fire.  The smaller truck then left before the fire was out.  Apparently the neighbor let the fire burn a stump(s) and other debris once the fire was contained.  Fortunately the fire was contained before any trees turned into a multi-story torch.

In the preceding photos the original burn pile fire is behind the fire truck.
