Trivia Night: Honesty

My team is so honest. Last night we were tied for first place and then we won the tie breaker question. The problem is that we should have never been tied for first place as we didn't have 17 answers correct. Ed - the host - goofed up our answer sheet.

At the end of the first contest Ed announced the "3 Dog Night" team and the "Moonpies" team tied for first with 17 answers correct. My team was confused as we thought we only had 15 answers correct after listening to Ed announce the correct answers. And while we used "3 Dog Night" as a team name before, some of us were confused as to whether that was our team name this night. It was. As it was a tie, it was a rush to answer the tie breaker question.

"What year did the Exxon Valdez oil spill occur?"

We answered 1989 and the other team answered 1988 and we were right. After losing 8 or more tie breaker questions we finally won a tie breaker question.

Darrel from our team had to carry the bucket around for the between-the-contests "quarters" question while the rest of us were left with trying to figure out how we won. We were sure we didn't have 17 answers correct but debated what to do in the chaos.

The women thought we should give the $20 drink certificate to the Moonpie team as they legitimately won. Us guys didn't care one way or the other but thought if we were sure we didn't win that we should ask Ed to double check our answers. Once Darrel returned from handling the quarters bucket he agreed with the women and we stopped Ed as he was about to ask the first question for the second contest and had him recheck our answers. We were right about being wrong and we gave the prize to the Moonpie team. The other contestants were shocked and surprised at our actions and we got a round of applause from everyone.

We planned to win the second game legitimately but we finished in the middle of the pack with 13 of 20 correct. The Moonpie team tied with another team for first place and since they won the first contest there was no tiebreaker and the team with the Hawaiian guy on it won.

If you are keeping track the lawyer/judge team did not win any contests this night. Their smart guy (the judge) never showed until the second game. I've noticed in the past that when he is late or not part of the contest his team doesn't do well.

Several of our team members won several of the quarters questions. As prizes Mona took two glasses and another member chose a Michelob polo shirt. Later his wife - after having a few beers - challenged him as to why he chose to get a shirt that said Michigan. Not that a shirt that said Michelob is any better but she was fine with it.

It was just me with Darrel, Mona, and the other three members of my team. Neither Rod nor Alan were there. Darrel and Mona weren't sure they would be there as they attended a dart tournament in Devils Lake over the weekend. While they had won the tournament in prior years the best they did this year was Darrel taking 4th place.

Answers:
  1. Barbara Walters
  2. Fritz the Cat

We said Felix the Cat (probably one of the reasons Ed got the total number of our answers wrong). I should have known this answer, as even though the movie was originally released in 1972, Rod and I saw this movie back when we were in college in the early 1980s when it was being re-shown at a midnight movie event. I was late to the trivia contest and the other members of my team had already answered the question and I went with it.
