Rosie Round the World

A 59 year old woman from Great Britain, Rosie Swale-Pope, is walking around the world. She started from Wales, crossed Europe, Russia and Siberia, Alaska, Canada and is currently walking across North Dakota. Her trip is a tribute to her late husband, who died of prostate cancer in 2002. Rosie started her walk October 3, 2003 and plans to finish by Christmas 2007.

My friend Rod, who is a delivery driver between Minot and Devils Lake, stopped and talked with her last week as she walked along Hwy 2. He was very impressed by her, and by her warmth and friendliness. He said he stopped to see if she needed anything and she took off her glove as he approached to shake his hand even though it was very cold out. He said he was impressed how friendly and gracious she was to him, and here he was trying to be friendly and gracious to a person who has been walking and living in the weather we have had recently.

The past week has been the most brutal of the winter so far here in North Dakota. Below zero temperatures and very strong winds making the wind chill well below freezing. The only consolation to the winds is that they have been at her back.

Rod said she was wearing tennis shoes as they are lighter to walk in. Tennis shoes in winter in North Dakota?! She does place gel warmers in her shoes from time to time to keep her feet warm.

She sleeps each night just off the side of the road in the trailer she pulls. Stays warm in it.

It sounds like she has had the most amazing journey around the world.

Here is her web site which has a map, photos, and news. Note: when using my Firefox browser the text is at the bottom - past the blank area. When I use Internet Explorer the text appears near the top. http://www.rosiearoundtheworld.co.uk/index.htm

Using a Google search one can find lots of newspaper articles. Here are a couple recent newspaper articles that give an overview:
Kenmare, ND
Devils Lake, ND Journal

Here are four photos Rod took of Rosie. Does this look like a day you want to be outside walking?
