When harrowing my south pasture I noticed the western skunk cabbage plants coming up in the swampy far corner of the pasture. The plants get quite large. The green leaves remind me of elephant ears. I'll try to remember to take photos of the plants when they are larger.
Yellow skunk cabbage (Lysichiton americanum), a showy arum native to the Pacific northwest. Unlike some of its fetid-smelling relatives, the flower emits a slightly skunky odor. This remarkable plant is also an important laxative for black bears emerging from hibernation.
